Press Releases Conforma Clad Adds Boiler Tube Wear Solutions for Power Generation New Albany, IN – (August 9, 2006)   Conforma Clad, a global leader of severe wear solutions, introduces its infiltration brazed tungsten carbide protection for boiler tubes, to coal fired power plants. Boiler tube failure is the number one source of forced outages in all coal fired power generation plants.  One of the major causes for premature tube failure is excessive fireside boiler tube erosion caused by the impact, cutting action, and abrasive wear of fly ash entrained flue gases, undercutting the area they strike.  It is estimated, that these plants lose approximately 6% of their power generation annually, due to boiler tube leaks – 23% of which is due to erosive wear.  Erosive wear is considered the most problematic, hardest to predict, and fastest growing issue within coal fired power generation plants. Conforma Clad applies its cladding to fans, burners, and shaft seal sleeves, and is now using that same technology to extend the lifespan of boiler tubes. A major power company installed prototypes 2 ½ years ago, in a high erosion and corrosion boiler environment. The purpose was to test Conforma Clad technology (Conforma Clad® infiltration brazed cladding 0.030” thick) along side two other major competitors; high chrome weld overlay 0.140” thick and thermal spray 0.040” thick.  The results were irrefutable; Conforma Clad significantly outperformed the competition, and had an extrapolated lifespan of 15 years, for the power plant’s boiler tubes. Conforma Clad protects boiler tubes (up to 23 ft.) installed in erosive areas, including gas paths and soot blower lanes, provide greater erosion resistance than stainless steel tube shields, nickel alloy, weld overlay or spray coatings.  The tube cladding also has a high coefficient of heat transfer and is able to withstand severe thermal shock.
