Results of EPRI Fan Blade Tests Prove Beneficial for both Conforma Clad and TVA/Kingston
Orlando, Florida — (December 10, 2002)Conforma Clad, a leading provider of severe wear solutions for fabricated metal components was awarded a major order from TVA to provide wear protection for all of the ID fans on Units 5 through 9 at their Kingston, TN coal-fired power plant. This award was based on a recent test conducted by TVA in conjunction with EPRI where performance stemming from major methods of wear protection was compared on Kingston’s Unit 9 fan (ER&TA test number 021807). All of the fan blades were exposed to high erosion during the 60 day test. The Conforma Clad tungsten carbide protected blades outperformed all other wear protection materials. Blades protected with chrome carbide weld overlay and those protected with HVOF were removed due to high erosion. The blade protected with chrome carbide weld overlay experienced a coating loss of 0.150”, suffered from a crack at the center plate junction, and experienced extreme wear at the leading edge. The Conforma Clad protected blade experienced only a 0.010” loss in thickness at the leading edge. Conforma Clad’s erosion resistance again reinforces that it performs 14-15 times better than chrome carbide weld overlay. Based on the test results, TVA/Kingston initiated an order to replace the existing fan blades in Units 5 through 9 with blades protected with Conforma Clad’s tungsten carbide cladding. Conforma Clad’s revolutionary process uses infiltration brazing to bond tungsten carbide to the base material of a component forming a hard, uniform protective cladding that provides superior wear against abrasion, erosion, and corrosion, even under high temperature conditions. Conforma Clad last significantly longer than typical wear protective coatings. Only 1.5 mm of Conforma Clad provides the same wear protection as 25.0mm of chrome carbide weld overlay, with an unmatched weight-to-erosion ratio. Superior wear resistance translates to longer life. More importantly, it minimizes the chance of costly, unscheduled outages. Conforma Clad’s proprietary technology has been used in coal-fired power plants for over 15 years, extending the life of fan blades, liners, ash conveyance equipment and pulverizers.
